BECOME A SINGER

Placement & Skill Assessments for the Ames Youth Choir are held annually in May and August. You can find upcoming dates for the choir on our calendar.
Here’s what to expect:
During Placement & Skill Assessments, singers may sing any song of their choice, but are welcome to attend a skill assessment without a prepared song. The Choir Director will have them warm up, do a few scales to get a feel for your singers vocal range, and then hear them sing a favorite piece or tune. If they do not have a prepared tune, the Director will generally ask them to sing a well known children’s song.
No previous experience or vocal training is required for participation in the choirs, only the ability to match pitch and maintain a melody. We are seeking singers who demonstrate a desire and commitment to participate in an exceptional choral ensemble. There is no fee assessed for the Placement & Skill Assessment. We encourage new singers to apply at any time.
Rehearsals generally take place on Mondays. All choirs perform in our Winter and Spring Concerts with additional performances and collaborations. If your singer would like to visit a rehearsal to learn more about Ames Youth Choir and get a feel for how things work, please fill out the form below. We can then arrange a time for your singer to attend a rehearsal and meet one of our Directors, and sing if time allows. We look forward to meeting you!
